Rustic Provencal, Wood-fired Cuisine of the Riviera
If you work South of Market, or you're staying at the W, or you are looking for a great restaurant while attending a conference at Moscone, look no further than Restaurant LuLu.
The food, the ambiance and the energy are what help define San Francisco as such a great destination spot for travelers. Those who live here already know Chef John Hennigan's Mediterranean-inspired menu makes the past fifteen years a continued hit among locals after Reed Hearon and partner Louise Clement launched the restaurant in January 1993, and Chefs Jody Denton and Jared Doobs had continued its legacy.
When you walk in the door, your eye is drawn to the wood-burning roasting oven, the busy kitchen beyond and the huge rotisserie behind it. The loft-like open space creates a festive atmosphere. The bar to the right is worth getting there before your reservation just to set the tone for a fun evening. They offer 70 selections of wine by the glass (but, unless money is no object, make sure to ask the price before being served).
Fifteen years ago, architect Cass Calder Smith did a magnificent job transforming this 1910 warehouse into a vaulted ceiling, colorful earthtone SoMa sensation.
LuLu's food is Provencal country in flavor that is served California family style. Their roasted chicken, olive oil mashed potatoes, roasted mussels, and their thin-crust pizza are a must. The roast pork, duck and Black Angus prime rib are also inevitable hits. Expect to pay $60 for two people. Most portions are generous. While Restaurant Lulu makes for a great date night, it is also a place you will want to take your local and out-of-town friends.
